National Symposium: Maiorescu and Maiorescianism in Contemporary Romanian Philosophical Consciousness

NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM Maiorescu and Maiorescianism in Contemporary Romanian Philosophical Consciousness, occasioned by the 170th anniversary of the thinker's birth. The symposium is organised by the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest together with the Romanian Society of Philosophy, on 26 November 2010.

Titu Maiorescu is regarded by most researchers of Romanian cultural history as the initiator of the critical spirit in our culture and the founder of the first Romanian philosophical school. Today no one categorically contests these qualities. Nevertheless, our contemporaries also attach to Titu Maiorescu the „image” once proposed by Constantin Noica: that of a „spirit of the wilderness”. The organisers intend, together with the participants in the symposium, to place under scrutiny the place that Maiorescu's work and the work of the „Maiorescians” hold in contemporary Romanian philosophical consciousness.

The symposium will have two moments:

(1) A COLLOQUIUM on the following themes:

a) Cultural institutions mentored by Titu Maiorescu;

b) Maiorescu's critical attitude towards Romanian culture. Maiorescianism today;

c) The philosophical school of the Maiorescian tradition. The critique of Maiorescian criticism in interwar thought.

(2) A PAPER SESSION, with the following sections:

The History of European Philosophy in Lectures

Maiorescian Logic

The Early Philosophy

Venue: the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest, Splaiul Independenţei, No. 204, Sector 6, Bucharest.

NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

Maiorescu and Maiorescianism in Contemporary Romanian Philosophical Consciousness

26 November 2010

The symposium is occasioned by the 170th anniversary of the birth of Titu Maiorescu and the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Philosophy. The latter event is connected with the name of Ioan Maiorescu, the philosopher's father. The history of this faculty, one might say, is imbued with the Maiorescian spirit. The symposium is organised by the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bucharest, the Centre for Research in the History of Philosophical Ideas, together with the Romanian Society of Philosophy.
