„The project “Healing Romanian Patrimony. Hospitals, Health & Heritage (H.A.R.P.)” was conceived as a cultural product meant to respond to the priorities signalled by Romanian public institutions regarding the conservation, restoration and protection of heritage buildings that fulfil the function of state public hospitals, managed in parallel with the objectives of modernizing and rehabilitating the infrastructure of these buildings, both for increasing the degree of comfort of patients and medical staff, and for making medical care more efficient by inserting high-performance medical equipment into spaces used for clinical purposes. Together we will chart a map of a healthy Romania, represented by the so-called hospital-monuments, in which heritage buildings host medical performance and state-of-the-art technology, and a map of a sick Romania, about which we speak little, and when we do, we embrace prejudices. This face of the suffering clinical Romania belongs to hospitals whose heritage buildings have been reconverted into commercial spaces or destroyed, their cultural memory being definitively compromised, in the absence of adequate archiving. Their salvation can occur through recourse to transforming the monument-buildings into medical museums or cultural centres. About how we intend to do all these things, in future interviews and reports. I thank Sergiu Mihalcea for the curiosity of asking us how we managed to form a platform of experts from fields such as philosophy, the history of medicine, art history and cultural heritage, in order to heal not the people in hospitals (it is not in our power to do that), but the hospitals for which all those on whom the struggle between life and death depends work. The clip below is only a captatio benevolentiae.” declared O. Șerban.
