The Critical Café (Cafeneaua critică), anniversary edition – Vasile Morar

On Wednesday, 22 March 2017, a new edition of the Cafeneaua critică dedicated to Professor Vasile Morar will take place. The event will be held at Club A (Str. Blănari, nr. 14, between the University and Piața Unirii, opposite Sfîntul Gheorghe). The host of the event is Ion Bogdan Lefter.

One of the leading Romanian figures in the socio-human sciences and a professor at the University of Bucharest, Vasile Morar turned 70 towards the end of last year (he was born on 19 November, in Dîrlos, near Mediaș, in Sibiu County). A philosopher by training, keeping throughout the history of universal conceptual thought as his frame of reference, Vasile Morar specialised — as few others have, and not only in our country — as an ethicist and aesthetician. His research and reflections advanced towards subdomains rarely visited by philosophy, yet so socially important, such as political or business ethics, the ethics and anthropology of violence, etc. From an aesthetic perspective, Professor Vasile Morar taught courses across the entire “front” of academic education with an artistic vocation. He was a professor at the University of Bucharest, at the Faculty of Letters, the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Faculty of Philosophy, but also in Visual Arts and at the “Ion Luca Caragiale” National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest. At the Cafeneaua critică the discussion will be about Vasile Morar's destiny as an intellectual-philosopher-ethicist-aesthetician.

Cafeneaua critică is a project of cultural debates on topical themes. The first series took place in the 1990s, at the Cafeneaua of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Bucharest. The second series debuted in November 2008 at Clubul TSC and continued at Clubul A, at Club Control and, from the autumn of 2011, again at Club A. In the 2016-2017 season the Cafeneaua critică meetings take place on Wednesday evenings.
